3 Songs Inspired by M. L. King

Song writers are inspired by great heroes, and great heroes are inspired by music and songs.
Here there are three of the most famous songs inspired by Martin Luther King Jr, listen to them in order to draw great inspiration.

1) Pride ( In the Name of Love) by U2

The song contains the erroneous reference to King’s shooting as “Early morning, April 4,” when it actually occurred after 6 p.m. Bono acknowledges the error and in live performances he occasionally changes the lyric to “Early evening….

LYRICS
One man come in the name of love
One man come and go
One man come here to justify
One man to overthrow
In the name of love!
One man in the name of love
In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

One man caught on a barbed wire fence
One man he resists
One man washed on an empty beach
One man betrayed with a kiss

In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more? In the name of love!

…nobody like you…there’s nobody like you…

Mmm…mmm…mmm…
Early morning, April 4
Shot rings out in the Memphis sky
Free at last, they took your life
They could not take your pride

In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more in the name of love?
In the name of love!
What more in the name of love…

2) One Vision by Queen

The song has been inspired by the life and exploits of Martin Luther King, with the lyrics recounting a man battling and overcoming the odds.
In the 2011 BBC documentary, Queen: Days of Our Lives, Taylor stated his lyrics were “sort of half nicked off Martin Luther King’s famous speech.”

LYRICS
One man, one goal, One mission.
One heart, one soul, Just one solution.
One flash of light, yeah, One god, one vision.

One flesh, one bone, One true religion.
One voice, one hope, One real decision.
Wowowowo, gimme one vision, yeah.

No wrong, no right.
I’m gonna tell you there’s no black and no white.
No blood, no stain.
All we need is one worldwide vision.

One flesh, one bone, One true religion.
One voice, one hope, One real decision.
Wowowowowo, oh, yeah, oh, yeah, oh, yeah!

I had a dream when I was young,
A dream of sweet illusion,
A glimpse of hope and unity,
And visions of one sweet union.

But a cold wind blows,
And a dark rain falls,
And in my heart it shows.
Look what they’ve done to my dream, yeah.

One vision!

So give me your hands, Give me your hearts.
I’m ready. There’s only one direction.
One world, one nation, Yeah, one vision.

No hate, no fight, Just excitation,
All through the night,
It’s a celebration, wowowowo, yeah.

One

One flesh, one bone, One true religion.
One voice, one hope, One real decision.

Gimme one night, yeah. Gimme one hope, hey.
Just gimme, ah. One man, one man,
One bar, one night, One day, hey, hey.
Just gimme gimme, gimme, gimme
Fried chicken. Vision

3) WHY ( The King Of Love Is Dead ) by Nina Simone

Written by Nina’s bass player Gene Taylor after the news of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s death had reached him. It was performed here for the first time. The song was heavily cut from the longer original recording, which featured a lot of Simone’s monologue.

LYRICS
What’s gonna happen now? In all of our cities?
My people are rising; they’re living in lies.
Even if they have to die
Even if they have to die at the moment
they know what life is
Even at that one moment that ya know what life is
If you have to die, it’s all right
Cause you know what life is
You know what freedom
is for one moment of your life

But he had seen the mountaintop
And he knew he could not stop
Always living with the threat of death ahead
Folks you’d better stop and think
Everybody knows we’re on the brink
What will happen, now that the King is dead?

We can all shed tears; it won’t change a thing
Teach your people: Will they ever learn?
Must you always kill with burn and burn with guns
And kill with guns and burn – don’t you know how we gotta react?

But he had seen the mountaintop
And he knew he could not stop
Always living with the threat of death ahead
Folks you’d better stop and think
Everybody knows we’re on the brink
What will happen, now that the King of love is dead?
